MACD & Co. is a design collective established by the MA Communication Design class of 2017, at Central Saint Martins. Our collective first came together on 1 October 2015, when the founding members gathered for a picnic in Lewis Cubitt Park, adjacent to our new premises in the Granary Building.
The following week we moved in, and set up our studio in room F201, along with Course Leader Rebecca Ross and our associate tutors. We are a diverse group, but what we have in common is a desire to understand and impact the visual world around us, and consider how as designers we create and transmit meaningful messages.
“Design collective” is the main concept of our final MA exhibition: this choice aims to bring to the public an interactive and engaging exhibition. We played around with the visual features of radical collectives in order to convey this idea.
We created a studio portrait, a signed manifesto, a series of publications, a shop and a workshop space within the exhibition. we designed a space that could bring together our individual voices as well as our collective efforts for the course.
We decided to divide our projects by design approaches. This choice underlines the collective patterns we went through during the two years of course and it represent a more engaging way for the public to navigate the exhibition.
For the exhibition, we designed a collective space where we organised workshops, tours, performances and social events for the whole duration of the show, in order to engage the public on our diverse practices as communication designers.
We designed a space that could integrate the concept of design collective, while at the same time highlighting everyone’s work. At the center of the room we set a big table for workshops, activities and meetings happening during the full duration of the exhibition. On the main wall we put a set of our publications, each one dedicated to a design approach. On the lateral walls, we put our manifesto and a workshop schedule.
